Sri Lanka broke the World record for the Highest One Day International total in their match against Netherlands(also known as Holland)at Amstelveen on 4th July 2006.Though many of us might not not be knowing of this record because this was neither telivised nor was there commentary on the radio. They went past the mark of 438 set by South Africans at Johannesburg, against the Australians.
Sanath Jayasuriya led the way with a turbo-charged 157 off 104 balls. His knock included 24 fours and one six.His first 50 came off 34 balls, his 100 off 64 balls and 150 off 100 balls.Tillakaratne Dilshan also contributed with a Century. He was Not Out on 117 off 78 balls, which included 15 fours and 2 sixes.Their were contributions from Sri Lankans like Upul Tharanga 18 off 21 balls, Captain Mahela Jayawardene 34 off 24 balls, Kumar Sangakkara 46 off 43 balls, Farvez Maharoof 31 off 25 balls.Sri Lankans made a record total of 443 for 9 wickets in 50 overs.
Netherland batsmen while chasing the huge total were All Out for 248 in 48.3 overs.Pace bowler Dilhara Fernando & Leg spinner Kaushal Lokuarachichi took 3 wickets each. And All-Rounder Farvez Maharoof & Leg spinner Malinga Bandara chipping with 2 wickets each.Sri Lankans won that match by 195 runs.Sanath Jayasuriya was declared the Man of the Match for his brilliant knock.
It wont take much time when teams cross the 500 mark in One Day Internationals with the Power Plays being used now-a-days.
